A hospital in China threw away a live baby

On October 26, 2011 a Chinese woman who was 8 months pregnant was rushed to a hospital with complications. She had to have an emergency birth. The baby was said to not be breathing and his skin was purple. The medical team diagnosed the baby as a stillborn and disposed of the baby without going through proper procedures.
Thirty minutes after the baby was put in a yellow bag, the mother’s sister-in-law asked to see the body. When she opened the bag, she saw the baby’s hands and feet moving. The chest was moving and air bubbles were coming from the mouth.
It was a boy, which was a surprise since the doctors had told them it was a girl to soften the blow. The baby was rushed to ICU and currently remains stable.

Fortune cookies were actually invented in America, and its existence is practically unknown in China

There are many theories where the fortune cookies first appeared, many people say they started in San Francisco or Los Angeles in the mid 1910’s. Other people say that they originated in the mid 1800’s in northern California, because the Chinese immigrants wanted to celebrate the moon festival, a holy day, where they would give special cakes with messages inside, but seeing they had only biscuits, they improvised and created the fortune cookie.
What we do know for certain is that, although they are served almost exclusively in Chinese restaurants abroad, fortune cookies are almost unknown in China. The places that serve them call them “Genuine American Fortune Cookies”.

Gold is so rare that the world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since the beginning of recorded history

Here are some other interesting gold facts:
• Gold doesn’t rust.
• Gold is edible.
• In 2005, Rick Munarriz queried whether Google or gold was a better investment when both seemed to have equal value on the stock market. By the end of 2008, Google closed at $307.65 a share, while gold closed the year at $866 an ounce.
• During the fourteenth century, drinking molten gold and crushed emeralds was used as a treatment for the bubonic plague.
• The San Francisco 49ers are named after the 1849 Gold Rush miners.
• It is also estimated that 80% of the world’s gold is still in the ground!

Polar bears are technically black!

The polar bear’s black skin is black, and its fur ir white. This allows it to soak up the most heat possible from the sun.
Polar bears need this since they spend time swimming in the artic waters. They’ve been known to swim up to 50 miles away from ice or land.
Polar bears are the largest of bears and on average are 8.5 feet tall.

Sara Bareilles wrote her huge hit song "Love Song" reluctantly because her label wanted her to

This would normally be unremarkable, because record labels push their artists to write certain kinds of songs all the time. However, knowing this changes the meaning of the song entirely. Check out the chorus of the song:
I'm not gonna write you a love song
'Cause you asked for it
'Cause you need one, you see
I'm not gonna write you a love song
You previously might've thought that it referred to a jilted lover that wanted to hear a love song from Sara. The person she's singing to is actually a record label executive who told her she needed to write a love song to prove that she could write "marketable hits." This apparently gave her the drive and passion to write her song!

Have you ever wondered what the extras in movies are talking about?

They are just saying 'walla- walla"! This is called a “walla- walla scene” and it is used to make the extras look like they are talking to each other. The only thing they have to say is walla over and over again to do the trick.
If you want to make it more realistic just mumble animatedly reproducing the fluctuations of conversation without much use of real phrases. In the U.K. it’s called “rhubarb”, and in Germany it’s called a “rhabarber”.
People literally say these words to fake conversations.
Did you know that the average extra’s salary is $112 a day?

“Big Ben” is not as big as you think!

You might think that “Big Ben” is a tall tower in London, when actually what’s called Big Ben is the bell that rings inside of it.
The original bell was 16 tons and casted on August 6, 1856. The bell was transported to the tower on a trolley drawn by 16 horses!
The tower has had many malfunction like in New Year’s Eve 1962, the clock was delayed for 10 minutes due to ice and snow on the long hands!

The average person eats 35 tons of food in a lifetime!

That’s equal to 1500 pounds or 680.4 kilograms a year! In addition to the weight of the food, Americans jointly eat 900 billion calories every day!
900 billion calories, if you can imagine, is equivalent to 76,726,342.711 slices of cheese pizza! Since it takes 3500 calories to create one pound, consuming 900 billion calories would cause someone to gain 257142857.14 pounds or 116,638,038 kilograms!

Mario got his name from the Nintendo office’s landlord

Mario Segale rented a warehouse to the then budding videogame company, Nintendo as they were working on a videogame called ‘Donkey Kong’. Unfortunately, the starting up company was behind on its rent which awarded a visit from Segale.
After a promise from Nintendo’s president that the rent would be paid, Segale simply left. Legend has it that this encounter gave the developers an idea to rename the character ‘Jumpman’ as ‘Mario’ and the rest is history.

When you click the “I’m feeling lucky” button on Google, it brings you to the Google logos from past years

They are called “Doodles”. They first started in 1998 when Google founders Larry and Sergey played with the corporate logo to show their attendance to the “Burning Man” festival in the Nevada desert.
A stick figure drawing was placed behind the 2nd "o" in the word. The positive response was so big that they assigned a whole team in the year 2000 to develop new doodles for many celebrations.
Now you know how to enjoy them, just click on the “I’m feeling lucky” button. Give it a try!

In Utah, it is illegal to detonate any nuclear weapons but it's OK to own them.

Apparently in Utah you can have nuclear weapons, just not detonate them. An actual group was formed in 2007 called the "Utah Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons".
Their two primary goals are:
1. To have the U.S. lead the world in disarming and ending the production of nuclear weapons.
2. Continued public awareness of nuclear weapons.

They have abundant traditions and festivities throughout their holiday season to mark Christmas Day and its importance to them. The Philippines is one of only two Asian countries that is predominantly Catholic and celebrates Christmas.

Justin Beiber was sued for child support

According to Mariah Yeater, Bieber is the dad of her three month old son! She claims that the Biebs lost his virginity to her backstage in one of his concerts 9 months ago. Yeater is requesting that the 17 year old singer provide child support for her baby.
In response to the allegation, Beiber offered some basic denials, and offered to take a DNA paternity test. He also threatened to countersue Yeater after he took the test.
Before the results came in, Yeater permanently dropped the lawsuit.

An island was formed naturally off the coast of Iceland in 1963 from a volcano eruption

An island named Surtsey just off the coast of Iceland finished forming in 1967 with a total surface of 2.7 km2 (1.0 sq mi). Since then, wind and wave erosion have caused the island to steadily diminish in size
As of 2002, its surface area was 1.4 km2 (0.54 sq mi). By the year 2100, the island should disappear completely. The island’s only human impact is a hut with a few bunk beds and a solar power source to drive an emergency radio and other key electronics.
All visitors check themselves and belongings to ensure no seeds are accidentally introduced by humans to this ecosystem. Scientists keep the growth of plants as natural as possible. For example, an improperly handled human defecation resulted in a tomato plant taking root which was immediately destroyed.

Congress only has to work one day a year!

If you think your representatives in Congress don't get a lot done now, just imagine if they stuck to the bare minimum required. The Twentieth Amendment states that they must meet at least once a year.

This meeting is supposed to take place on January 3rd at noon. But if they're too busy, the law allows them to appoint a different day. The amendment also established January 20 as Inauguration Day. Before then, newly elected presidents had to wait four months before taking office on March 4.

The leader of Mexicos' most dangerous drug cartel was in a military group that fought against cartels!

Heriberto Lazcano enlisted in the Mexican Army at age 17 in a group called "Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales," which was a group of elite soldiers dedicated to fight against drug cartels. In 1998, however, a drug lord from the Gulf Cartel bribed him and 30 other soldiers to be his bodyguards.

This double-cross gave rise to Los Zetas. Lazcano was third in command and eventually became the leader of the group. In 2001, however, he would again perform a double-cross, this time agains the Gulf Cartel. Since then, he's engaged in a turf war against his former employers.

In China children actually keep crickets as pets!

But crickets are involved in much more like in a Chinese pastime called “Cricket Fighting” where male crickets fight just like in cockfighting, and bullfighting.

The CIA almost committed terrorism against the US in order to blame Cuba for it!

It was called Operation Northwoods. The acts of terrorism were to include high-jackings and bombings. The targets were going to be places like Miami and Washington. The idea was that CIA operatives would commit the fake terrorist acts, then they would plant false evidence and blame it on Cuba.

Cuba had recently become a communist nation, but the government needed public support to make the dealings with them more aggressive than they were up to that point. The plan was drafted by the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest levels of military advisors to the President. Fortunately, John F. Kennedy declined to accept the plan and it was never put in motion.

Henry Ford paid his employees 3 times as much as anyone else to boost productivity!

When he built the Model T, Ford's idea was that he wanted to build a car that was cheap enough that his employees would be able to buy it. At the time, most people working factory jobs made $11 a week. Ford paid his employees $5 a day.

The reason he did this was that he thought that by paying his employees that much more, he would reduce the amount of people who quit. That would let the employee get really good at what he did, since training a new worker takes so much time.

Ford's model became incredibly successful and he revolutionized not just the auto industry, but manufacturing in general. The combination of high pay, high efficiency jobs with cheap consumer goods was called Fordism and was adopted all over the world.

Caffeine evolved as a POISON!

The way that caffeine jolts your brain is this: it blocks certain receptors in the brain and other organs. This causes a set of reactions that results in your body releasing adrenaline. Adrenaline increases your heart rate, blood pressure and blood to the muscles.

However, the reason that these effects exists is because caffeine was developed over time as a poison by plants as a way to kill insects that were trying to eat them! The effects of caffeine on other insects actually paralyzes and kills them. Next time you have a cup of coffee, just think that you're drinking some warm bug poison!

There was a British sitcom about Hitler!

It was called "Heil Honey I'm Home!" and it was released in 1990. The show focuses on Adolf Hitler and his wife, Eva Braun while living next to a Jewish couple. Obviously, the show is centered on Hitler not being able to get along with his neighbors. The first (and only episode) centered around the Jewish couple crashing a dinner party that Hitler was throwing for Neville Chamberlain.

Although 8 episodes were planned (and some shot), only that first one was aired, as most people thought that the comedy was just too tasteless for television. The show was cancelled immediately and neither the pilot nor any of the other episodes were shown ever again.

Kim Jong Il denied his son succession rights because he tried to go to Disneyland!

North Korea tries really hard to stop any kind of outside pop-culture from coming into the country in fears that it would destabilize the dictatorship. The state-run media frequently claims that imperialists are trying to infiltrate the country through things like music and television.

So when his son got caught with a fake passport trying to go to Tokyo Disneyland, Kim Jong Il took him out of the line of succession and put his younger son as the favored to replace him when he dies. The older son is up to his same tricks, however, as it was later reported that he let his own son go to the concert of South Korean superstar Rain

Abraham Lincoln was a licensed bartender

In fact, Abraham Lincoln is the only U.S. president to hold this job! He was a co-owner of the pub ‘Berry and Lincoln’ in Springfield, Illinois with a man named William Berry.

It was hard for Berry and Lincoln to run a bar together because while Lincoln preferred not to drink, Berry was an alcoholic and would sometimes drink the customers’ orders before they could. In 1834, Lincoln ran for state legislator and won so he gave up the bartending business. The entire enterprise was abandoned by 1840 due to Lincoln’s politics and Berry’s death five years prior in 1835.

No one has blue eyes!

As you look closely in the mirror trying to disprove this, physics explains how this is possible. Your eyes appear blue in the same way that the sky appears blue- scattered light. The iris, which is responsible for eye color, has three layers. Each layer has different color pigments such as yellow or brown which, when combined, make hazel and brown eyes.

But blue and grey eyes have a brown pigment in one small layer of the eye and as light bounces off of the iris, creates a blue color due to its short wavelengths!

Seth MacFarlane, creator of Family Guy, originally intended to work for Disney

He started off in cartoon network working on Dexter's Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, and Johnny Bravo. He was the most involved with Johny Bravo, because of how easy it was for him to develop his own style. He also did some freelance for Walt Disney writing for the TV shows “Jungle Cubs” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”.

When executives at Fox saw his work, they were immediately interested. They gave him a budget of $50,000 to develop an entirely new cartoon to show on prime-time. They loved the story of Family Guy and they’ve kept him ever since January 1999.

Delta once argued they should pay less for gay plane crash victims than straight ones!

In the rare occasion of a plane crash, the aftermath for the victims' families is not just about the grief of losing a loved one. They have to go through a long and arduous process of determining how much their loved one was worth. One of the key measures that they calculate is "future earnings," the idea being that a family should be compensated for the amount of money that the victim would have made if he'd stayed alive.
In a 1985 court case, Delta somehow uncovered that one of the passengers was gay, something that the victims' parents didn't even know! They then argued that because he was gay, he was more likely to contract AIDS, which would lower his life expectancy, and therefore, his future earnings.
In the end, Delta's argument did not gain any traction with the judge. Delta apologized for this stance only a couple of years later.

The Sony Playstation was originally a joint project with Nintendo!

In the early 1990s, Nintendo was interested in moving away from using cartridges (remember those?) because they tended to be less durable than CD-ROMs. They approached Sony and Phillips separately to develop a CD drive for the Super NES called the SNES-CD.
When the SNES-CD was about to be revealed in a 1991 conference, Nintendo President realized that their contract with Sony gave them complete control over any and all titles written on the SNES CD-ROM format. He secretly cancelled all plans to develop with Sony and instead announced that they were partnering with Phillips to develop the attachment.
Sony, instead of just taking their loss and dropping their research, decided to use what they had developed. The end result was the Playstation. The rest is history: the Playstation went on to become of the best selling consoles ever and it dethroned Nintendo as the dominant console maker when it went head to head with the Nintendo 64.

The famous story of America spending millions developing a Space Pen, while Russians used a pencil is FALSE.

It's a classic cautionary tale on government excess: the American government wastes millions of dollars developing a pen that can write upside down, while the more resourceful Russians just used a pencil instead. It'd be a good story, if it were true.
In reality, the "Space Pen" was developed by a private company and were both cheap AND used by Russian astronauts as well. The Space Pen cost NASA $1.98 a piece, and the company benefited from being marketed as the Space Pen and it sold great among the general population. It was so successful that the Russian astronauts started using it too!
The kicker is this: pencils would be a terrible idea inside a space ship. Think about it: you have to sharpen them, which causes debris, the tips could break, which causes debris, if you erase something, it causes debris, they're flammable, they break easily. Can you imagine a pencil tip floating into a delicate piece of space ship machinery? It's a pretty widespread legend... but it's bull.

A straight Rugby player suffered a stroke, and woke up gay!

A 266 lb amateur rugby player was trying to impress his teammates at practice by doing a backflip. His try ended in tragedy: he fell on his neck and suffered a stroke. While he recovered without any major physical damage, his brain seems to have gone through an amazing transformation: he woke up gay.
Chris Birch says that, even though he was planning on settling down with his girlfriend, he was no longer attracted to women when he woke up. He said 'I had never been attracted to a man before - I'd never even had any gay friends. But I didn't care who I was before, I had to be true to my feelings.'
He found himself no longer interested in rugby and that he had little in common with his old friends. He now works as a hairdresser and lives with his boyfriend. His neurologist explained to him that strokes have a way of changing people's personalities. Some people wake up with different accents, or become artists. The brain makes new neural connections that can trigger things people weren't aware of.

Super Mario Brother 3 Never Really Happened!

The prior game Super Mario Bros 2 (USA version) was all a dream. It also seems that the 3rd game in the series might have been all a stage play! Check out the image below. Some say it's speculation but we're convinced. What do you think?

The Red Imported Fire Ants form an unsinkable raft to escape floods!

This species was accidentally brought over from Brazil to the United States in the 1930s. They have thrived because they have great survival skills and are more aggressive than other ants. They are more painful to humans and cause a lot of damage to plans, or this reason they're considered pests.
However, one of their most impressive abilities shows when there is an increase in water level. If this happens, the colony comes together in the shape of a raft or ball that is able to float. The workers stay on the outside and the queen stays safe inside.
Once they come to a stationary object, they swarm it and wait for the water levels to come down. Check out the video below to see this impressive behavior.

There was a Chinese knock-off Harry Potter sequel. It was just The Hobbit with different names!

In the (seemingly) endless wait between the fourth and fifth Harry Potter books, a 'sequel' unexpectedly hit the Chinese market. Drenched by a mysterious rain, Harry Potter became small, hairy and lost all his magic powers... sounds like a Hobbit no? What's more Harry Potter finds himself journeying through the wilderness to fight an evil dragon!
As it turns out, the 'writer' of the pirate novel had just taken The Hobbit, made some alterations and changed names, and sold it as a sequel to Harry Potter! The book was quickly taken out of circulation

A man survived 18 days with no food or water just by licking his prison walls!

A company crashed 2 trains as a publicity stunt, and killed 3 people!

An agent for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad named William George Crush, noted in 1896 that train crashes attracted large crowds. He had the idea to set up a pre-planned train crash as a stunt, and he convinced his bosses to go along.

The railroad company set up a fake town near Waco, TX appropriately called "Crash." On the date of the crash, 40,000 people showed up. They placed two locomotives on opposite ends of a 4 mile track and set them on a 45mph collision course.
When the locomotives crashed into each other, their boilers exploded. The explosion and fire killed 3 people and injured many more! William George Crush was fired on the spot, but was rehired the next day when they noticed there wasn't a lot of negative publicity from one of the deadliest publicity stunts in history.

Helicopters can't fly past this open diamond mine in Russia. They run the risk of being sucked in!

There's an open pit diamond mine called the Mirny Mine in East Siberia, Russia. It's very deep. At over 1,700 ft deep, it's the 4th deepest mine in the world. It also has a diameter of over 3,900ft. This makes it the second largest excavated hole in the world!
The mine is so large, that the airspace above it was closed for helicopters. Due to the size of the mine, the air currents above it become really dangerous. There were a few reported cases of helicopters crashing after being sucked into the mine due to the pressures from this air flow!

The Sheepshead has teeth that look human!

The Sheepshead is a species of fish that is found in the Southern parts of the United States. They feed on shrimp, sandfleas, clams, and crabs. What do these things have in common? They tend to have harder shells.
In order to be able to eat them, the Sheepshead has developed stubby teeth that look human! The stubby form of their teeth allow them to more easily crush their prey. Check out the source for more creepy pics!

Kissing is good for your teeth!

Although you might wanna be careful who you kiss, because they can transmit a number of diseases, kissing a healthy partner can be good for your teeth. There are a few reasons for this:
1. Everyone has bacteria in their saliva; about 80% is common to everyone, and 20% unique to each individual. When you exchange another healthy person's saliva, you are exchanging the 20% unique bacteria that they have in their mouth. This means that by exchanging saliva, you are being exposed, and become resistant to that 20% of unique bacteria!
2. Passionate kissing stimulates the flow of saliva. This neutralizes acids, and flushes away food particles, preventing tooth decay. More saliva also means that your mouth will be less dry, and dry mouths are more prone to infections.
3. Saliva helps rebuild tooth enamel, which further prevents tooth decay.

Space smells!

This seems contradictory, because space is just an empty vacuum. Also, humans can't survive without being completely airtight in space. So how is it possible that we know? An ISS Science Officer explains that whenever he would operate the airlock for his crew mates in the international space station, he noticed a distinct smell.
He thought it was air ducts at first, but then he noticed it was stronger on their suits, tools etc. He describes it as "metallic; a rather pleasant sweet metallic sensation. It reminded me of my college summers where I labored for many hours with an arc welding torch repairing heavy equipment for a small logging outfit."

Subway was started by a 17 year old to pay for med school!

Have you ever noticed that Subway is owned by Doctor's Associates? The reason for this is because the chain was started by a 17-year old kid called Fred DeLuca, who was trying to find a way to pay through his med school education. He paired up with another doctor who lent him $1000 to start his first sandwich shop in 1965.
The pair learned a lot about marketing and the company started to expand. Fred DeLuca eventually did go to college and graduated, but he had fallen in love with running Subway, so he focused on expanding it. That turned out to be a good decision, as Subway is now the biggest fast food chain in the world!
